4to; pp. lxxxiv, 242, (3). Original cloth, printed paper label on spine. Illustrated,
First edition, limited to 750 copies. 102 plates. This illustrated catalogue contains a full bibliographical catalogue of a collection of 230 books issued by Simon de Colines, including several pieces not in Renouard. This collection was formed by Fred Schreiber and sold en bloc to the Brigham Young University. Simon de Colines married the widow of Estienne I and was active in Paris from 1520 to 1546. With the help of the finest French book decorators and type designers, Colines virtually transformed the French book. He accomplished this by using the small, handy format pioneered by Aldus Manutius. In that way his press published reasonably priced "pocket" classics, making them affordable by students and popularizing italic and cursive types in France. He produced the earliest accented Greek type in France, fifteen years prior to the Grecs du Roi. In 1528, de Colines introduced an elegant cursive, derived from Arrighi, followed by a smaller italic based on the Aldine. Colines"s typographic innovations were eventually to be refined further by his successors in Paris, notably his stepson Robert Estienne, who apprenticed under him. He prepared the first critical text of the Greek New Testament, the first printed in France. The 230 books described in this catalogue represent approximately one-third of Simon de Colines"s total production during the quarter century of his career. They include examples of all the typographic material at Colines"s disposal (ornamental initials, printer devices and title borders). Facsimiles of two of Colines"s publisher catalogues, issued in 1545 and 1546, are also included. The introduction (by Jeanne Veyrin-Forrer) is in French, with an English translation. Fine copy.
