Auction catalogues of the enormous library of Mr. J.T. Bodel Nijenhuis (1797 – 1872), the grandson of the famous Leiden librarian-publisher J. Luchtmans and the son-in-law of H.W. Tydeman. Bodel Nijenhuis was one of the most important Dutch bookmen of the 19th century. From 1821 to 1852 he was acting director at the Luchtmans firm, that was taken over by E.J. Brill in 1852. After that Bodel Nijenhuis himself to editing bibliographic works, cataloguing the library of the Dutch Litterary Society and collecting a vast collection of important books, maps and prints. The auction was divided into 2 division. The 1st division encompassed the library and was auctioned in 2 parts: the 1st part was auctioned on May 24 1873 and consisted of 2232 lots concerning “Histoire étrangère, - des religions, - de la civilisation”; the 2nd part 2nd part of the library was auctioned on November 10 1873 and its 2568 lots were devoted to “Histoire générale, sociale et littéraire des Pays-Bas”. The 2nd division consisted of 4 auctions of portraits and prints; the 2nd, 3d and 4th part of this division were auctioned on November 3, 1873 (2324 lots), February 2, 1874 (2461 lots) and November 18, 1874 (2287 lots). This last auction was not executed as the Dutch Government bought the collection (od Dutch portraits) as a whole. Unfortunately the 1st part of this 2nd division wanting. A few (of the fragile) wrappers damaged. An impressive library and collection.
