4to, pp. xviii, 163 + col. frontspice and 18 col. plates. Decorated publisher's cloth, pictorial dust-jacket. Illustrated.
Re-edition of the original 1965-edition. Scattered through the coastal mountains of Southern California are many intriguing painted caves and rock outcrops. Reminders of the early Chumash Indians, the paintings remained little known because of their location in dense brush and mountainous terrain. The author increased the number of known sites in the Chumash region from 19 to 80. The paintings range in size from a few feet to more then forty feet in length. They had symbolic and religious meaning. Th work starts with a treatment of the land, the history of the people and their culture (houses, society, language, religion &c) before going to the paintings themselves (location, subject maytter, techniques, techniques, style, meaning &c). With 4 appendices (o.a. San Nicolás Island, Chinigchinich, Mission trade with Mexico &c), a bibliography, a glossary and an index. With 120 b/w illustrations, a col. frontispice and a portfolio with 31 (2 fold) col. plates. Ex Bibliotheca Büch. Book and dust-jacket as new. A sumptuous publication.
