This is the 9th part of the "Cours de la science militaire, � l'usage de l'infanterie, de la cavalerie, de l'artillerie, du genie & de la marine", the largest military encyclopedia from the 18th century, consisting of 16 volumes (each of them being a complete entity in itself). The different volumes were published between 1740 and 1757 (the 4 volumes on the "Science de la Marine" appeared only in 1757). The whole work was never finished and the 16 volumes are hardly ever to be found together - even in national libraries. Title printed in black and red with an engraved title-vignette by I. Besoet; the nice engraved frontispiece also by Besoet. Complete with all 24 engraved folding plates (by Bardet de Villeneuve) illustrating the siege and attack of cities and places (a.o. the Kehl fortresse at the Rhine) with extensive explanations. Strong impressions of engraved plates. Fine copy of a rare work.
