Oluf (or Olaus) Gerhard Tychsen (1734 � 1815) was not only a famous Orientalist and prolific writer on Arabic and Hebraic subjects, but also librarian of the old Rostock University. He published an Elementale Arabicum and a Syriacum, several codices (a.o. from the Vatican), edited the Almakrizi treatise on Islamic coins (after a Leiden Codex ) and criticized the palaeographic studies by Kennicott who wanted to improve the Hebraic text of the Old Testament by studying newly acquired Hebraic and Samaritan codices. His extensive library, that was described by Hartmann in 1817, was acquired by the Rostock University Library after his death. And even today this interesting scholar and his library are still the subject of several publications and theses at German Universities. This short historical overview by its Librarian, who announces in the introduction that he has decided that the library will be open to everyone on Wednesday 2-3 hr and Saturday 2-5 hr (in winter 2-4 hr), starts with its history in 1569 (although there must have been a library as early as 1503, but those books have disappeared), quoting several Orders from the Duke of Mecklenburg regarding the Library and mentioning extensively the gifts to the Library from dignitaries, professors &c ( in 1793 he published a continuation of this list of gifts). A very interesting document, giving insight in University life at an old University during the period of Enlightenment. Paper (slightly soiled) in modern wrappers. Rare.
