The battle of Midway took place about five months after the Japanese capture of Wake Island, and six months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During the battle, the United States Navy defeated a Japanese attack. That battle was a decisive victory for the Americans, because permanently weakened the Japanese Navy. Japan was after that battle unable to reconstitute its naval forces while the Americans could provide quick replacements. As a result of Midway, the U.S. was able to seize the initiative in the Pacific and go on the offensive. The central focus of this book, giving an extensive narrative account of the battle, are the hundreds of photographs (and drawings) it contains. These were gathered from public and private sources, all of them with very detailed captions. They show the desolation of Midway and its smallness when compared to the size of the ocean in which it lies and the devastation wrought by shells, bombs and torpedoes. With index and bibliography. Ex Bibliotheca Büch met zijn aankoopnotitie"Guam 14 II 1996". As new.
