From the series: Capper reprint series. Facsimile reprint of the original edition: Christchurch: Lyttelton Times Company, 1882. Copy from the library of Boudewijn Büch: with his annotation: "Christchurch NZ ) / 8 V 1992". Collection of articles originally published in the New Zealand country journal. Thomas Henry Potts [1824-1888] trained as a gunsmith in his birthplace of Suffolk. In 1850 after the death of his parents, he emigrated to New zealand. His keen interest in botany, natural history, ornithology, entomology and botany, promoted him to bring seeds, plants and trees on his voyage to Lyttleton. He was one of New Zealand's first conservationists - in todays meaning of the word. He cared deeply for the birds, animals and plants of his adapted country, and in "Out in the Open" is a well written collection of scientific notes. Fine copy in a fine dust jacket.
