4to, pp. XXVI, 401. Hardcover with dust jacket. Illustrated. Includes index.
This book provides a comprehensive account of Pope's interest in the non-literary arts, including painting, landscape gardening, architecture, sculpture and music. It begins with a discussion of his relationships with contemporary painters, and the use of painting in his critiscism and poetry. About half the book is devoted to landscape gardening. Chapters on architecture show how he managed to reconcile a taste for the classic and gothic, and a concluding chapter on the sculpture of funerary monuments explores his contribution to Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. The myth of his insensibility to music and his relations with Handel are discussed in an appendix. Backcover dust jacket damaged. Edges with some wear. Good copy.
