Fedor Chaliapin (1873-1938) belonged to the greatest of the 20th-century opera-singers. But he was also a very strong actor with much influence, even today. He had a wretched childhood and no formal education. He made his début at the Scala in 1901, working with Caruso and Toscanini. He went in exile in 1922 and left Russia forever to tour all over the world thereafter. He died in Paris from leukaemia. This book gives a vivid picture of Chaliapin in close-up, on and off the stage, as well as detailed accounts of his major roles, including the unsurpassed Boris Godunov. With a portrait as frontispice, over 100 remarkable photographs, on pp 541-588 a discography by Alan Kelly and Vladimir Gurvich, notes and an index.. Book and dust-jacket fine. An important work.
