Oblong 8-vo ( 27,5 x 22 cm). Pp. 88. Illustrated hardcover. The cave-paintings were discovered in 1940 by a.o. one of the authors (Marsal). The cave was closed to the public in 1963 in order to preserve the paintings. These were damaged by algae, molds and bacteria due to the great number of visitors and their carbon dioxide, After the cave was closed, the paintings were restored to their original state. The first part of this work provides an analysis of the fundamental relationship between prehistoric man and his natural surroundings. The second part is devoted to the scientific researches to save the paintings. Richly illustrated with (often full-page) coloured and b/w photographs of the paintings, the destructive agents, the technical machinery and the surroundings of the cave, text-drawings, a chronology and plans. Text in French, English, German and Spanish. A very good copy of a nice work.
