4to (16,5 x 25 cm). Pp. 28 + fold. facs. map. Orig. wrappers.
Offprint from Mnemosyne (A Journal of Classical Studies), Serie 3, Vol. 3. Isidorus Hispalensis (Saint Isidore of Seville, 560-636) was "the last scholar of the ancient world". His Etymologiae, the first medieval encyclopedia, was a compilation of all learning of his time. In this work the earth was considered as round (wether disc-shaped or globular). Uhde's article describes the particulars of a worldmap from the 8th century that was based on the work of Isidore and was discovered in the Vatican Library. With a folding facsimile of the map containing more than 130 locations of countries, rivers, lakes, towns &c (Codex Vat. Lat. 6018). Covers slightly browned, otherwise very good.
