Gr-8vo (17,5 x 24 cm). Pp. 142. Illustrated soft cover.
This is a fascinating study on insects that have been trapped in the resin produced by trees in the Baltic area that, when clot, became amber. Published at the occasion of an exhibition (october 1992 - May 1993). Introductory chapter on the amber of the Baltic area in mythology, history, craft, medicine and industry by Jean-Paul Haenni and Christophe Dufour. The actual chapters on the amber phantoms are: Fossil Insects in Baltic amber, Origins of Baltic amber, Physical and chemical properties of Baltic amber, The resin trap, Identification of insect inclusions, Environment of the amber-producing trees, Amber and evolution. With 2 annexes on the preparation and conservation of inclusions, a bibliography and an index. With 186 b/w and col. photographs and drawings. Text in French (but it's all about the colour photographs). Very good copy.
