Folio (28 x 35 cm). 38 printed specimina. Half-cloth portfolio in slipcase..
A collection of 38 (of 43) printed specimens of the first Book of Genesis, published at the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Gutenberg 42-line Bible. Each of the invited designers (from 20 nations) had printed 1500 copies of their interpretation/solution of Bible-typography. The specimens were printed in their own language; they range from single leaves to 8 pages and from 12-mo to folio-format. The total edition was limited to 1500 copies, of which 500 copies for sale. Our copy contains 8 specimens from the USA (a.o. Greenwood Press, Joseph Blumenthal, Frederic Goudy), 4 specimens from Great Britain ( Finberg – Chiswick Press, Hans Schmoller Alan Dodson and Bertrhold Wolpe), 1 from Ireland (Colm O Lochlainn), 2 specimens from the Netherlands (Typefoundry Amsterdam – S.H. de Roos and Joh. Enschedé – J. van Krimpen), 7 from Germany (D. Stempel – Hermann Zapf und Gotthard de Beauclair, Josef Käufer), 1 from Austria (Friedrich Neugebauer), 3 from Switzerland (Birkhäuser – Jan Tschichold and Benteli – Max Caflisch), 2 from France (Collège Technique Estienne – Maximilien Vox and Alberto Tallone), 1 from Spain (Juan Trochut-Blanchard), 1 from Argentina (Raul M. Rosariva), 1 from Israel (Henri Friedlaender), 4 from Sweden (Johan Hillbom and Algot Ringstrom), 2 from Denmark (C. Volmer Nordlunde and Viggo Naae) and 1 from Norway (Kjell Armand Johansen). Often Vox’ contribution not present as he missed the deadline, but in our copy it is present. Unfortunately the introductory booklet is not present. However, each specimen provides the complete information regarding type face, printing office, designer and the kind of paper (and is often accompanied by a portrait-card of the designer). The whole put in a half-cloth portfolio with paper-covered designer-boards (by Sofia Widén) in slipcase. Margins slipcase soiled, but portfolio and specimens very good.
