The author , Louis Charles Dupain de Montesson (1715? – 179?) was a cartographer, as well as a military architect, engineer and warfare scientist (Capitaine d'infanterie, Pensionnaire du Roi, et Ingenieur de ses Camps et Armées). The set-up of this work is a continuing conversation between several military officers during forty days on all aspects of warfare and campaigning, a.o. the construction of fortifications and the art of besieging. But the author discusses also several 18th-century battles of Mirandola in 1734, Parma, the river Séchia, Fontenoy and the French campaigns in the Low Countries in 1744 & 1748. The work is divided into 3 parts, first page of each part with a woodcut-vignette. With an index of the subjects discussed during these 40 days. A Portuguese translation of this work was published in 1762 in Lisbon. As a military architect he also wrote “L'art de lever les plans de tout ce qui a rapport à la guerre et à l'architecture civile et champêtre”. Collation: a8, b4, A – 2B8, 2C2 Typographic title-page with woodcut-fleuron.
