Full title: Hortulus anime || cum alijs [quam]plurimis orationi=||bus pristine impressioni su=||peradditis: vt tabulam in || huius calce annexã in=||tue[n]ti pate[n]tissim[u]m erit.||. On leaf a1: Incipit cursus beate Marie v[ir]ginis iuxta //statutum Urbani pape. ij.editum in concilio // apud clarummontem celebrato. At the end the colophon (F3v): ¶ Hortulus anime impensis probi, viri Jo=// hannis Koberger ciuis Nure[m]Bergen[sis]. impres=||sus: finem optatum sortitus est Lugduni arte || et industria Johannis Clein chalcographi.|| Anno domini. M.ccccc.xvj. xviij. kalendas || Aprilis.|| (The actual date was 15 March 1516). And on the opposite leaf (F4r) the large printer’s device of Clein (7,2 x 9,6 cm). This end-leaf mounted, image with small hole and lower white part (outside of device) torn off. Hortulus Animae (Little Garden of the Soul, Seelengärtlein) were prayer books that were very popular in the early sixteenth century. The first Ortulus was printed at Strasbourg by Wilhelm Schaffener of Rappoltsweiler (13 III 1498 – Oldenbourg L1, Goff H 485).
“Der Selen Würtzgart” (Herb garden of the soul) was printed at Ulm as early as 1483; also a work of devotion, however not a prayer book, but intended to provide moral instruction.
The earliest Hortulus in German appeared in 1501, but the Latin editions on the whole predominate. Many of these Hortulae, though small in size, were illustrated with beautifully designed woodcuts. Within the Hortulus, the Little Office of our Lady occupies the most important place, but there are a great variety of popular prayers. The name "Hortulus Animæ" was derived not from the æsthetic but from the utilitarian aspects of a garden.
The present work is the 4th Clein-Koberger edition (earlier editions in 1511 and twice in 1513), but the first with the woodcuts of Hans Springinklee (1512 – 1522), Erhard Schön.(died 1542) and Wolfgang Resch ( c . 1480–after 1537). The collection of prayers is preceded by the calendar. The work is nicely printed in black and red with 2-line initials in red and a great number of 4-line floriated initials. Text of each page printed within one of several 4-part woodcut ornamental borders; these are ascribed to Springinklee (cf. Oldenbourg, p. 124, no. 1). Two of these border pieces have the date 1515 (leaves C2v and F1v). Contemporary colouring of the illustrations and a great part of the ornamental borders.
Endpapers with extensive (probably contemp.) text written in ink. Calf of central part of front cover somewhat damaged, margins of title-page restored, part of title-page (recto and verso, with a part of printed title) missing, inner margins of a few leaves somewhat stuck together (but far outside the ornamental borders) and with the inevitable small stains, but otherwise a very fine, complete Hortulus-copy in contemp. calf-binding, with contemp. handcoloring and in excellent condition.
