Théophile Raynaud (15 November 1583 – 31 October 1663) was a French Jesuit theologian and writer. Raynaud was born at Sospello near Nice, at the time an Italian county; but he lived all his live in France. He entered the Society of Jesus on 21 November 1602, and stayed within the Society although thwarted by his compadres and even petitioned to leave the Order. In private life being a very nice person, his writings nevertheless were often very poignant, even caustic. He taught and theology at different institutions of the Society, a.o. grammar and humanities at Avignon, philosophy and theology at Lyon and even for a time at Rome. He died at the Society’s Institute at Lyon, being 80 at the time. Being very erudite, he wrote a great number of books on very different subjects, often quite original, a.o. Erotemata de bonis et malis libris, Symbola antoniana, Heteroclita spiritualia. Several of his works were put on the Index. Under the pseudonym “Petrus à Valle clausa” he wrote a number of satirical treatises, directed against the Dominicans. These works were condemned by the parliaments of Aix and Toulouse and burnt. His collected works (in 20 volumes !) were published in Lyon, 1665-9.
Hermanus Bossius (Girolamo Bosso, 1588 – 1650). Bosso was born at Pavia and was there professor in literature. He was especially interested in Roman Antiquities, on which he published several theses. Bosso’s work on Toga was originally published in 1614 in Ticini, at the Vianus printing office. The STCN gives both works ( De Pileo. By Anselmus Solerius & De toga Romana commentarius, By Hieronymus Bossius) the same number (167112) but does not mention that they are bound together.
Nice: Title-pages of both works have the same vignette, with the same motto, but as reflected images.
The plates of the 2nd work depict i.a. various (clerical) costumes and hats. Fine copy.
