Imp. folio (38 x 50 cm). Title & 36 plates. Half-leather, marbled boards, gilt-lettered spine.
Complete with the lithographed title and all 36 handcolored lithogr. plates. Actual size of the mounted lithographs 23,5 x 31,5 cm; each with its own caption (K.K. Leibgarde Gend’Armerie, K.K. Arcieren – Leibgarde, K.K. Trabanten-Leibgarde, K.K. Hofburgwache, K.K. Feldmarschall (Porträt Sr. Majestät des Kaisers), K.K. General der Cavallerie (in ungarischer Uniform), K.K. Feldzeugmeister, K.K. General und Flügel-Adjutant, K.K. Deutsche Linien-Infanterie &c until Armée- u. Regiments-Capelmeister nebst Musikbanden). Karl August von Pettenkofen (1822-1889) became a student at the Viennese “Akademie der bildenden Künste” in 1834. In 1842 and 1843 he served in the Dragon Regiment of Louis I of Bavaria. Until 1851 most of his art production were water-colours and lithographs, and often especially Austrian army uniforms. Later he travelled much, often to Italy and Paris. In his time, his paintings of the Hungarian puszta and its population were rather famous (ADB 53, 32-5). Josef Anton Strassgschwandtner (1826 – 1881) was, like Pettenkofer, a student at the Viennese Art Academy (1843-5). He painted mainly military and hunting scenes, as well as horses and was likewise a gifted lithographer ( Thieme XXXI, 497). Part of the plates has also been published in Pettenkoffer's "Das k.k. oesterreich. Militär in 24 Blättern" (Wien, Leykum, 1847). Provenance: the famous F(erdinand) C(asper) Koch library (sold in auction Hauswedell & Nolte, December 1974 - however this work not present in that catalogue). On Koch see a.o. Buijnsters, Gesch Nederl. Antiq.: "Het exlibris F.C. Koch is zoveel als een kenmerk voor de hoogste kwaliteit"" ), with his bookplate. Rare. We could trace only a copy in the BM, but not in German, Austrian, Dutch or Swiss libraries. Title page and several borders with small, unobtrusive stains, but outside of the lithographs . These are themselves splendid, freshly coloured prints. A fine copy of a famous work, complete with the often missing title-page.
