Reworking/improvement of the text of the Rev. Laurence Howell (A Compleat History of the Holy Bible, London, 1716), by the Rev. George Burder, with considerable additions and improvements ("... for Mr Howel's style was frequently negligent, and required some improvement to render it agreeable to modern and intelligent readers"......) . Burder (1752-1832), was one of the founders of the British and Foreign Bible Society and the Religious Tract Society and a man of great influence. He was also secretary to the London Missionary Society. The work was also published in London and William W. Woodward, one of the pioneering Philadelphia publishers and printers, did publish this work undoubtedly in coöperation with his London colleague (see: Rosalind Remer :Printers and Men of Capital: Philadelphia Book Publishers in the New Republic , Univ Pennsylvania Press, 2000). Unfortunately only vol. 1 present. Covers somewhat worn, french title with tear and frontal flyleaf wanting, a few stains inside, but altogether sound binding and a very good copy.
