8vo, pp. XIX, 540. Reddish-brown sand grain blind tooled cloth. Rebacked spine with gilt lettering. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 7 full page woodcuts.
The famous Swiss-American naturalist Louis Agassiz [1807-1873], professor at Harvard, undertook this "Brazilian Expedition" - made possible by Nathaniel Thayer and lasting from April 1865 till July 1866 - to collect specimens for his Natural History Museum and because of "some disturbances of my health" and to collect specimens for his Natural Museum at Boston [they returned with e.g. 1500 fish-species whereas before that time only ca. 100 from that region were known]. Most of this narrative has been written by Mrs. [Elizabeth C.] Agassiz, originally kept as a diary "partly for the entertainment of her friends", but eventually including the scientific observations by the Husband-Professor. There are chapters on Rio de Janeiro and environs, Pará, Manaos, Tabtinga, Tefeé, Mauhes, the Rio Negro, Ceará, excursions on the coast, physical history of the Amazones and general impressions of Brazil. With all 20 woodcuts [13 inside and 7 full page outside of text] from the original photographs. The first edition appeared in 1868 [Ticknor and Fields] and the first edition with hard cover in 1870 [at their successors Fields, Osgood & Co]. A Portugese, French and Spanish translation appeared in 1871, 1874 and 1890. With ex libris of the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research at New York. Lower margins of pp. 75-81 slightly damaged.
