Jean Barbault (Viarmes, 1718 - Rome, 1762) was a French painter and engraver who spent his artistic career in Rome. As a painter, he is considered a minor artist. In 2010 there was an exposition of his paintings at Strasbourg (Dominique Jacquot : Jean Barbault. Le Théâtre de la vie italienne, Ed. Mus. Strasbourg). But he is best remembered for his series of prints on the antiquities of Rome, as well as two other series of archaeological plates. In Paris he was a pupil of Jean Restout (II). In 1747 he failed to win the Prix de Rome and the went to Rome at his own expense. Nevertheless, in 1749 he became a pensionnaire at the Académie de France in Rome (it was not absolutely necessary to win the Paris contest to enter the Palazzo Mancini ; in fact, some winners never made the trip). But four years later he was soon thrown out of the Académie by the new director (Charles-Joseph Natoir) and even worse, loaded with debts. In the meantime, Barbault had become a member of the circle of Paolo Anesi, Philothée François Duflos and Giovanni Battista Piranesi and made engravings for the “Varie vedute di Roma antica e moderna published in Rome”. ( see : Michael Bryan: Biographical and Critical Dictionary of Painters and Engravers - 1813-16). Barbault did not only engrave antique ruins, but he also painted them, as well as idealized Roman landscapes. His work was greatly influenced by Giovanni Paolo Pannini (1691 –1765), a Roman architect and painter, particularly interested in the city’s antiquities, known as one of the Vedutisti, especialy for his Roman vistas.
The work is dedicated to Jean-François-Joseph de Rochechouart (1708-1777), Bishop of Laon, later Cardinal and a scion of the oldest noble French family. His predecessor struggled with the Jansenists, but Rochechouart was primarily concerned with the social peace in his diocese. He was charged by Louis XV with a mission to Clement XIII in order to bring about the definitive suppression of the Jesuits.
