8vo, pp. [12], 222, [5]. Full mottled calf. With engraved frontispiece.
Barrin [1640 1718], from the important Breton family Barrin de la Gallissonnière, became vicar-general of the diocese of Nantes. He wrote/translated this work (that he later regretted) before becoming a priest. It was published in 1676 in Paris (and in the same year a selection of the Heroides at Rouen) and in 1692 in Lyon (Gay-L. I, 131). This edition of 1704 consists of 3 parts, with continuous pagination: the first division contains the 6 epistles (+ an epitaph and a mourning elegy); the 2nd division contains the well-known Amores and is divided into two parts (each with its own preface and half-title): Part 1 (pp. 85-152) contains 23 Amores and Part 2 (pp. 155 222) contains the remaining 21. With a nice engraved frontispiece by A.D. Blois after J. Verkolje and a catalogue of 3 pages announcing the books printed and to be had from Abraham de Hondt. Several authors (and libraries; Cf Barbier IV, 921; Graesse I, 298; Rose (Reg. Erotic Bks),1307; Buisman 92-94) suppose that Barrin is also the author of "Vénus dans le Cloître, ou la Religieuse en Chemise", published under the pseudonyme Abbé Du Prat in 1683 at "Köln", but it seems more likely that that work was written by François de Chavigny (de la Bretonnière), a Benedictine who sought refuge in Holland and contributed to the "Nouvelles de la République des Lettres". A charming work. Rare.
