Vol. 1 issued under the title “PLA Quarterly” in 1957. This name was changed to The Private Library because PLA to most people meant “Port of London Authority”. We offer the 1st series (1957 – 1967) in 8 volumes (complete in 44 consecutive parts: Vols 1 & 2 both issued in 6 parts, Vols 3 & 4 each 8 parts, Subsequent volumes issued in 4 parts; unfortunately Vol. 1, No 1 and Vol 2, Nos 1 & 2 not as originals but as (nice) xerographic copies). 2nd series (1968 – 1969): altogether 8 issues, Vols 1 & 2, each 4 issues. 3d series (1984 –1987): altogether 16 issues, Vols. 7 – 10, each 4 issues. 4th series (1988 – 1990): altogether 13 issues, Vols 1 – 3, each 4 issues, and 4th series, Vol.4 : 1 (Spring 1991). Altogether 81 issues. With the index to Volumes I-VI (1957 – 1965). With the regular contributions as Association Affairs, Correspondence, Book Reviews and “Recent Private Books”. From the 3d series on, most issues are accompanied by the separate loose News Letter and the Exchange Lists. The Journal covers many aspects of bibliophilism, from articles on Bookbinding (e.g. Early American Bookbinding, Japanese Bookbinding, Patience Cockerell &c) and Book–restauration, to e.g. Bookplates by Frans Masereel. Numerous articles on Book Illustrators (as e.g. John Minton, Edy-Legrand, Alice B. Woodward, Faith Jaques, but especially the contributions by Peter Tucker on this subject , a.o. Hester Sainsbury, David Gentleman (pp. 49-100 of 4th series , Vol. 1) and Michael Ayrton (pp. 2-52, 3d Series, Vol 9 and pp. 183-191, 4th seies, Vol. 1). Several articles on Bookshops in cities outside of London (Oxford, Cambridge, Bournemouth, Bristol, Bath, Dublin &c). Two very nice contributions (including a Check List of publications) by Gerald Cinamon, Chief Designer at Penguin Books, devoted to the “Glasgow Style” created by Talwin Morris, the Art manager since 1893 of the famous Glasgow publishers Blackie and Son (1987, 3d Series, Vol 10:1, pp3-47 and 1990, 4th Series, Vol 3:1, pp. 33-42). Many articles on Libraries of famous Persons (Goethe’s, Pepys’, Plantin, Margaret of York, Parkes, Witt, Charles Lamb &c), on Book collecting by the collectors themselves (Miniature Books by Spielman, Broadsides, Books on Books, Inscribed Books, Children’s Books, Book plates, Book Jackets, Joyce, Corvo – by Donald weeks-, Casanova, Restif de la Bretonne, Henry Miller, Dibdin – by Renato Rabaiotti-, Sitwelliana, T.S. Eliot,Oscar Wilde, T.J. Wise – by Maurice P. Pariser, Andrew Lang, Fine Printing, Detective Fiction, &c). On collecting Italian Writing Books, almost a monograph (pp. 4-44, 4th Series, Vol. 2, No 1). But the most interesting contributions to this journal are of course the very numerous ones on Private Presses, not only on the famous ones (Golden Cockerell, Gregynog, Gogmagog, Doves, Folio Society), but also on the many existing contemporary ones (Priapus Press, St. Teresa’s, Pandora, Otto Rohse, Lilac Tree, H.G. Dixey, Golden Head, The Vine Press, Keepsake, Cuckoo Hill, Ark Press, Allenholme, Herity, Wattle Grove, Signet, Dolmen, Rosemary, Fantasy, Stourton, Art Society, Latin Press, Keepsake, Rocket, Fleece, Glad Hand, Grey Walls, Cuala press &c), on the Limited Editions Club, the limited Edition publications of Lawrence Durrell by Peter Baldwin (4th series, 1990, Vol. “, No 4, pp. 148-177). A very rich source of information on bibliophilism and bibliophiles.
